DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Division of Social Work
The Division of Social Work offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work. In order to graduate with this degree, the student must complete 120 undergraduate hours of study. This requirement is met by having the student complete coursework that fulfills the requirements of various aspects of a liberal arts education. The specific number of hours needed are distributed across the following categories:
  • University General Education Program -- (41 hours)
    Please visit the Undergraduate Bulletin and choose Graduation from the University for a more complete description of the university general education program requirements. In order to meet the American Heritage requirement in this category, students majoring in social work must take SOCI 3422 as one of their courses.
  • College and Degree (B.A.) Requirements -- (18 hours)
    The College and Bachelor of Arts requirements are in addition to the university general education program requirements that are listed above. Students majoring in social work must take PHIL 1611 to fulfill the B.A. Mathematics/Natural Sciences requirement prior to taking SOCI 3311 and SWRK 3930.
  • The Major -- (38 hours - in addition to the requirements of the University General Education Program)
    Pre-requisites include: BIOL 1010/1011, BIOL 1020/1021, ANTH 1200 (included in the University General Education Program requirements), and SOCI 3311. Completion of the latter course meets the university's requirement for a computational intensive course (marked by a 'C' in the undergraduate catalog. The core curriculum includes: SWRK 2910, SWRK2911, SWRK3902, SWRK3903, SWRK3904, SWRK3906, SWRK3920, SWRK3930, SWRK4830, SWRK4831, SWRK4840, and SWRK4841. Completion of the latter two courses in this list meets the university's requirement for an integrative course (marked by an 'I' in the undergraduate catalog).
  • Electives
    Electives may be chosen to bring the total number of hours to 120. Among these the student must complete at least 42 hours of upper division credits (3000 level and above). The student also must complete a writing intensive course (marked by a 'W' in the undergraduate catalog).
NOTE: Successful student progression requires that each student earn a minimum grade of "C" in all required courses for the social work major. Students who repeat two required courses for the major or field instruction will be required to have an academic review by division faculty in the term following the second course repetition. Although students may declare a social work major at any point in their matriculation, students should have a minimum of 40 hours completed including ENGL 1020, ANTH 1200, and two courses from the following list: SOCI 1111; PSYC 1200; POLS 1100; or ECON 2120 before entering the introductory social work courses, SWRK 2910 and SWRK 2911. Upon completion of these courses, students must submit an application for full admittance to the social work major.

Social Work Minor

Completion of 18 semester hours in sociology and social work courses including SOCI 1111, SWRK 2910, and 2911, and 9 additional upper division hours in social work courses.
