UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2008-2009

The College of Arts and Sciences is now soliciting applications for general undergraduate scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Information about these scholarships can be found below, including the criteria, the amount of the scholarships, and the application procedure. All applicants must complete the scholarship application form. The deadline for receipt of all application materials (including letters of nomination and letters of recommendation) is MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2008. NOTE: All students must be enrolled full-time with a declared major in an Arts and Sciences program in the semesters during which they hold any of the following scholarships.

OPEN TO ALL MAJORS

Reed Baskin Legacy Scholarship

AMOUNT: ONE SCHOLARSHIP FOR APPROXIMATELY $2,800

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a degree in the College of Arts and Sciences, who have a minimum ACT score of 23, live in the Mid-South region, and are proven leaders in their community. Recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and participate in 15 hours of community service each semester.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form.

General Herbert L. Grills Memorial Scholarship

AMOUNT: SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $500-$1,000

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in any discipline in the College of Arts and Sciences. Freshmen with a minimum ACT of 27, and upperclassmen with a minimum GPA of 2.80 are eligible. Students must be enrolled full-time.

College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Chapter Book Scholarship

AMOUNT: TWO SCHOLARSHIPS FOR $500

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled full-time as juniors or seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences, and who have a minimum GPA of 3.25.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form.

OPEN TO MAJORS IN HISTORY, SOCIOLOGY, OR GEOGRAPHY

Matthew Seth McGaughran Scholarship

AMOUNT: SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $500-$1,500

CRITERIA: The recipients of this scholarship shall be qualified and deserving students enrolled at The University of Memphis. Scholarship recipients shall be students pursuing a degree in History, Sociology, or Geography through the College of Arts and Sciences, have a minimum ACT score of 23, or a grade point average of 3.00. Preference will be given to high-ability students with a demonstrated financial need.

OPEN TO MAJORS IN THE HUMANITIES

Marcus Orr Humanities Scholarship

AMOUNT: THREE SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $2,000-$2,500

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a degree in the Humanities (English, Foreign Languages, Philosophy, History, Art History, or Musicology). Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 or other demonstrated potential for academic distincition. Students must be enrolled full-time.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must be nominated by a full-time faculty member in a Humanities department. Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form. One additional letter of recommendation solicited by the student from a Humanities faculty member is also required. The letter of nomination and the letter or recommendation should be submitted by the faculty members directly to Dr. Will Thompson

OPEN TO TRANSFER STUDENTS

Joseph N. Mitchell and Nancy Mitchell Scholarship

AMOUNT: SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $2,000-$3,000

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to transfer students who have normally completed two years of college from a four-year institution or an Associates Degree from a community college. Students must be enrolled full-time, with a declared major in the College of Arts and Sciences. They must maintain a GPA of 3.25. There is a possibility of renewal for a total of four semesters. Candidates must apply each year for renewed support. Preference is given to in-coming transfer students, but current students who fit the criteria may also apply.

OPEN TO SCIENCE MAJORS IN CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, MATHEMATICS, OR GEOGRAPHY PLANNING TO BECOME HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS

Dr. Naseeb Shaheen Scholarship

AMOUNT: THREE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR APPROXIMATELY $1,800

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or Geography who plan to become high school teachers in one or more of these subjects. Students must be enrolled full-time, be classified at juniors, seniors, or entering MAT/Secondary Licensure students, display financial need, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50, and be residents of Tennessee or of one of the following: Desoto or Marshall County in Mississippi, Crittenden County in Arkansas.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form.

OPEN TO PRE-MED AND PRE-HEALTH STUDENTS

Dr. Russell A. Jones Memorial Scholarship

AMOUNT: SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $500-$1,000

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to seniors majoring in Biology, Chemistry, or a related science discipline, and who are pursuing careers at physicians. Recipients must be full-time students, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and in their major.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form. In addition, students must also request that two letters of recommendation from faculty in the Natural Sciences departments be forwarded directly to Dr. Will Thompson. It is the student's responsibility to choose those faculty who will write letters on their behalf, and to make sure that the letters are submitted by the due date.

Dr. Thomas N. Stern Pre-Med Scholarship

AMOUNT: SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $500-$1,500

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing pre-med studies. Preference is given to seniors who have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, who demonstrate financial need, and who are majors in the College of Arts and Sciences.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form. In addition, students must also request that two letters of recommendation from faculty in the Natural Sciences departments be forwarded directly to Dr. Will Thompson. It is the student's responsibility to choose those faculty who will write letters on their behalf, and to make sure that the letters are submitted by the due date.

Thomas N. Stern M.D. Fund for Excellence in Cardiovascular Medicine

AMOUNT: SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FROM APPROXIMATELY $500-$1,500

CRITERIA: This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing pre-med or pre-health studies. Preference is given to seniors who have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, who demonstrate financial need, and who are majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Thomas N. Stern M.D. Fund was established by the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation to provide scholarships for undergraduate students at The University of Memphis. The fund was established to honor Thomas N. Stern, M.D. and to support the programs of the College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Memphis.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit a letter of application and the attached form. The letter of application should describe the student's academic background and future plans, especially in terms of the student's desire to pursue post-graduate studies in the medical or healthcare fields. As demonstrated financial need is also one of the criteria, students should address this issue in their letter as well, mentioning all university or outside scholarships that they have received. Students must also request that two letters of recommendation from individuals who can address the student's goal of medical school be forwarded directly to Dr. Will Thompson. At least one letter (if not both) must be from a faculty member at The University of Memphis. No more than one letter may be from a healthcare professional familiar with the student's academic background and future plans.

The Dr. Roger Hiatt Pre-Med Studies Scholarship

AMOUNT: ONE SCHOLARSHIP FOR APPROXIMATELY $1,200

CRITERIA: The recipients of this scholarship shall be students enrolled at The University of Memphis and pursuing Pre-Med Studies. Preference will be given to rising sophomores and juniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, reflecting academic success at the University and promise in medical school. Recipients may reapply for funding for a subsequent year providing they maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Students must submit the general scholarship application form and the personal statement described on the form. In addition, students must also request that two letters of recommendation from faculty in the Natural Sciences departments be forwarded directly to Dr. Will Thompson. It is the student's responsibility to choose those faculty who will write letters on their behalf, and to make sure that the letters are submitted by the due date.
