The College of Arts and Sciences is dedicated to providing opportunities for our students and faculty that extend beyond the classroom, the library, or the lab. Many opportunities exist outside of Memphis, Shelby County, and Tennessee, but the cost to the individual student or faculty member can prohibit their taking advantage of these openings.
The Travel Enrichment Fund allows the College of Arts and Sciences to help these students and faculty make the most of their travel opportunities by providing supplemental funds to offset costs associated with study abroad programs, attendance at conferences, undergraduate research forums, and other such programs. The fund is set up so that all monies can be designated quickly, thereby allowing the college, the recipient, and the donor to realize the fund’s benefits almost immediately.
In the spring of 2004, Mr. Philip Donovan initiated The Donovan Travel Enrichment Fund for student and faculty travel. With additional financial support from numerous sponsors, this award has been renamed the College of Arts and Sciences Travel Enrichment Fund. Each year's recipients will be brought together at an annual luncheon with the sponsors to report on what they learned during their travels.
Students and faculty apply to the college for travel awards each semester by submitting a statement of purpose, a schedule of travel, and a detailed budget that explains all funding sources and the amount needed to make the travel possible. Awards are based on the merit of the application and the financial need of the applicant. The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, along with an appointed faculty committee, determines the number and amount of the awards granted.
We hope that you will consider donating to the Travel Enrichment Fund so that the College of Arts and Sciences can maximize the travel opportunities open to our students and faculty members. Please see “CAS Award Winners” in this edition of Profiles for a complete list of recent Travel Enrichment Fund winners. Also please join CAS in thanking the Travel Enrichment Fund donors listed below for their generosity.
