2007 marks the 25th anniversary of The Center for Research on Women (CROW), and the center is celebrating with a very special event, entitled “Snapshots: Memphis Women at Work .” Snapshots is a project in which 25 of Memphis’ most influential women were invited to take photographs of a woman at work of her choosing, including photographers such as The University of Memphis’ own Dr. Shirley Raines. These photographs were then gathered together for a free public exhibit at the Art Museum of the University of Memphis, where they were on display in a free public exhibit on November 10, 2007.
The Snapshots project is a continuation of the work CROW has done related to women, wages, and economic self-sufficiency. CROW researchers have addressed topics relevant to the Memphis and Mid-South area, such as high rates of teen pregnancy, low wage jobs, unfair labor practices, and challenges surrounding Latino immigration. The center aims to examine problems of social inequality as they relate to gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. CROW then puts this research into action by partnering with representatives from government agencies and non-profit organizations to influence policy at the local, regional, and national levels. CROW is an interdisciplinary academic center, involving research and work in the fields of psychology, history, anthropology, sociology, social work, criminology and criminal justice, and others. The center is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, but its range and influence extend beyond our college and beyond the University of Memphis. The College of Arts and Sciences is proud to have CROW as a part of our family, and we congratulate both the center and all involved on 25 years of serving our community.
