Alumni Profile: Thomas Boggs is True Blue

Thomas Boggs was recently named the winner of the University of Memphis Alumni Association’s True Blue Tradition Award. This award was formally presented at the 2007 homecoming pep rally on November 2nd. Boggs was also recognized at the homecoming football game halftime on November 3rd, during which he was an honored guest of President Raines.
The True Blue Tradition award is given in recognition of a person who has created a lasting tradition within the University of Memphis, and winners are selected by the National Executive Board of Directors of the Alumni Association. Previously the award has been given to Highland Hundred founders and Dr. Mayo for his work with the Heritage Room. Boggs has been influential in creating tradition for the University of Memphis annual homecoming activities. He provides the food and support necessary to deliver a world-class cookout for the parade and pep rally festivities, including this year’s event.
As CEO of Huey’s, the popular and award-winning chain of Memphis restaurants, Thomas Boggs has reached a level of success and local celebrity. He is also deeply rooted and committed to both Memphis and the U of M. Boggs first attended the University of Memphis in 1962, then returned to the University in 1970 to complete his studies. Under the instruction of legendary History professor Dr. Marcus Orr and others, Boggs finished his degree in 1972.
Following graduation, he went on to serve the Memphis community on numerous boards promoting tourism and the hospitality industry, including eight years as president of the Memphis Restaurant Association. Boggs also served as vice president of the 2001 Memphis in May International Festival and as president in 2002. He has also previously served as president of the MIFA Advisory Board and is currently serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board of the College of Arts and Sciences. Boggs has been recognized previously by the University of Memphis; in 2002 he was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus by the Alumni Chapter of the College of Arts and Sciences.
