11th Annual Alumni Chapter Awards

Each year the CAS Alumni Chapter Board of Directors chooses among nominated alumni to receive the Outstanding Alumni Award. The board also chooses the winner or winners of the Alumni Chapter Outstanding Friend Award. The college was proud to announce an additional award from the Alumni Chapter for 2007, the Book Scholarship for undergraduate CAS students.

A banquet is held every year to honor these award-winners. As in years past, the proceeds from the event are used to fund the College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Chapter Endowed Scholarship. This year’s ceremony, the 11th Annual Alumni Chapter Awards, was held September 20, 2007 at the Racquet Club of Memphis. Honored at the event were three Outstanding Alumni, Dr. Reed Baskin, Mr. Eric Robertson, and Ms. Peggy Turley, and two Outstanding Friends, Mr. Wallace Bruce and Mrs. Olivia Bruce. The winners of the Book Scholarship for 2007 were Melissa Joy, Manda Townsend, Christopher Cosby, and Kevin Woodward.

In order to be nominated for an Outstanding Alumni Award, an individual must have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from the University of Memphis, achieved noteworthy success in his or her career or field, and demonstrated consistent and exemplary service to the community. Outstanding Friends are individuals who have exhibited outstanding service to the college and the University of Memphis who are non-alumni. About this year’s Outstanding Friends, Dean Henry Kurtz says, “The College of Arts & Sciences thanks the Bruces for their many years of loyal support. Their enthusiasm and dedication to our college is greatly appreciated.”

The College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Chapter Book Scholarship is open to all full-time undergraduate students who are in their junior or senior year and who have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students submit a letter of application to the college in order to be considered for the award. Winners are awarded $500 each to fund the cost of books and other supplies. CAS hopes to see this award grow to include more recipients in semesters to come.

We congratulate this year’s winners and are pleased to add their names to the complete list of award-winners from the CAS Alumni Chapter:
