Feminist Theory Reading Group

About the Feminist Theory Reading Group

The Feminist Theory Reading Group began in Spring 2005 as a way for students to pursue literature outside of the classroom and enhance their knowledge of the subject as a whole. Each semester, a new subject or theme is investigated, and one or two people serve as group leaders, who research, gather, and distribute the literature. Themes in the past have included figures like Irigaray, Butler, Cixous, and LeDoeuf and topics such as masculinity and multicultural feminism.

While many members of the group have been involved for multiple semesters, anyone is encouraged to join, regardless of one’s level of experience with feminist theory.

Spring 2008 Topic

The topic for the spring 2008 semester is Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex, led by Kristin Gissberg. The group will be reading the entire text and possibly some additional secondary articles. As they become available these articles, as well as the syllabus, will be available at: http://umdrive.memphis.edu/kgissbrg/public/.

The group will meet Wednesday afternoons at 4 p.m. in the University of Memphis bookstore. Any further inquires may be addressed to Kristin Gissberg at kgissbrg@memphis.edu.
