ConferencesIda B. Wells Conference The Conference is being organized by the Ida B. Wells Association, founded seven years ago by University of Memphis graduate students to promote discussion of philosophical issues arising from the African American experience and to provide a context in which to mentor undergraduates. In this spirit, we have invited Professors Lucius Outlaw and Donna Marcano to share their expertise and experiences with a new generation of Memphis students and a select group of African American undergraduates drawn from around the country. Information about the conference and the conference program. Spindel Conference Murray Spindel, who died of cancer on July 7, 1999, was a great friend to the University of Memphis and to the faculty members and students in the Philosophy Department who came to know him. In the fall of 1981, Murray gave an endowment to the University of Memphis that has been used by the Philosophy Department to fund an annual conference on varying philosophical topics. Directed by faculty, the conference is held each fall (usually late September or early October); the proceedings are published as a supplement to The Southern Journal of Philosophy (edited in the Philosophy Department by Nancy Simco). The Spindel Philosophy Conference has become an internationally renowned event, and the Supplements are timely and important contributions to philosophy.

Societies Merleau-Ponty Circle Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française (SAPLF) Kas Saghafi, Assistant Professor, is President of the Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française (SAPLF). Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française (SAPLF) was founded in 1989 by Colette Michel (Northern Illinois University), who is also the founder of the peer-reviewed journal Bulletin de la Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française. Currently, an annual meeting of the society is held at the Eastern Division of the APA with two to three invited speakers. It is customary that, at least, one of the speakers delivers a talk in French. Recent invited speakers have included Jean-Michel Salanskis, V. Y. Mudimbe, Leonard Lawlor, and Hugh Silverman. The Société is “a forum for discussion of the diverse philosophical strains of French thought in all historical periods, with an emphasis on contemporary figures and issues and a commitment to interdisciplinary perspectives.” The journal affiliated with the society, edited by Diane Perpich (Clemson University) and Dan Smith (Purdue University), publishes two issues per year.
