Welcome

2009 Philosophy Graduate Student Conference
The 2009 University of Memphis Philosophy Graduate Student Conference will take place on February 20-21, 2009. The topic of the conference is The Sacred and the Secular: Philosophy and Religion in the 21st Century. We are pleased to announce that Professor John D. Caputo (Syracuse University) will serve as the keynote speaker. All current graduate-degree-seeking students are invited to submit papers for consideration. Although the conference topic is broad, a particular emphasis will be placed on phenomenological, hermeneutic, and post-modern treatment of religious themes, as well as philosophical considerations related to onto-theology, political theology, and “weak theology.” Conference announcement, submission guidelines, and further information available here [pdf].

Philosophical Horizons
Philosophical Horizons is a grassroots program dedicated to introducing the practice of philosophy into Memphis area schools. Students will be introduced to philosophy by means of a discussion group format in which topics including (but not limited to) moral philosophy, ancient philosophy, and epistemology will be discussed. The main objective of the program is to present philosophy in an accessible manner while giving students the opportunity to gain confidence in developing and articulating their own opinions within a productive discussion. Erasmus Mundus Program
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Memphis was invited by the European Union to participate in the Erasmus Mundus EuroPhilosophie Program. This is a Master’s program comprised of a consortium of seven European Union universities (including those in Germany, Belgium, France, and the Czech Republic) and three “third-country” partners from non-EU countries. The Department of Philosophy was the only department in the United States invited to participate. The program provides students and scholars from EU participating universities the opportunity to study philosophy at the University of Memphis. The program also provides our graduate students and faculty the opportunity to travel as visiting scholars to Departments of Philosophy within the consortium.
