NARAN is an international group of scholars and activists promoting research, teaching, and civic engagement on cross-border issues and fair trade with North America. What are the goals of NARAN?  - Sharing research questions, findings, methods, data, funding sources and other resources.
- Providing a forum for the development of collaborative, transnational research.
- Collaborating in teaching and facilitating student exchanges through new media tools.
- Developing materials on fair trade issues for general audiences.
- Stimulation public engagement with corporate and government policies that are shaping globalization, particularly those involving free trade.

What can these goals accomplish? The I-69 NAFTA corridor provides a case in point of what the Network can accomplish. By proactively linking scholars along the corridor's route, the Network can enable comprehensive and coordinated documentation of community impact related to the construction and eventual opening of I-69.
By focusing together on this discrete instance of globalization, which by definition tends to evade local accountability, the Network can promote civic engagement with issues pertinent to the corridor, assist residents in linking local decision-making to the larger dynamics of globalization and, ideally, promote citizen-driven interventions to shape public policy. Link to I-69 Project History of NARAN A faculty research group at the Center for Research on Women (CROW) at the University of Memphis developed the idea of a transnational network of scholars to contend with the shifting dynamics of global trade in North America. NARAN was further developed by participants in a conference called Trading Justice: NAFTA'S New Links and Conflicts held in March 24-26, 2005 at the University of Memphis and sponsored by CROW and the Benjamin L.
