PROGRAMS FOR MINORITY AND DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS

Florida State Law Summer for Undergraduates Program

Are you considering law school?

Florida State Law is currently accepting applications from undergraduate students for its 2008 Summer for Undergraduates Program, which provides select students with an inside look at law school and the legal profession.

Deadline is March 28 - Dates are: May 19 - June 13

Only sixty students are accepted - Sign up today


Some of the below programs are available on a competitive basis to African-American students only; others are available to all academically and/or financially disadvantaged ethnic minorities and women students. All of the programs have application deadlines. Interested students should obtain detailed information from the web sites and contact information provided below.

  1. Drexel University College of Medicine Programs

    Drexel University offers a set of preparatory programs for students whose goal is admission to medical school, including programs earmarked for students from lower socioeconomic/disadvantaged backgrounds.   3. Pathway to Health Careers Program

    East Tennessee State University announces its Pathway to Health Careers Program, which is sequentially structured to provide students the guidance they need for the pursuit of a health science career. The program is used to transition students to the next academic level as well as to provide constant exposure to the health science field. All Pathway programs are free and everyone is encouraged to apply, even if they do not appear to be eligible. Information is available online:

  6. TIP (Tennessee Institute for Pre-professionals)

    The Office of Health Career Programs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center wishes to introduce a variety of services which may be useful to your program participants, especially those considering careers in the health professions.                     We are especially interested in establishing contact with student groups which are under represented in the health professions career field. These student groups would include: and from individuals who are historically underrepresented in science and in the health care professions:  underrepresented minority students, non-traditional students, veterans, students with disabilities, and students who represent the first in their families to pursue higher education.

  7. Minority Medical Education Program (MMEP)

    MMEP is a nationally recognized summer enrichment program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Specifics are available at:

  8. Health Career Opportunity Program (HCOP)

    HCOP, an eight-week summer program, is a unique opportunity for post-freshmen and post-sophomore students who want to become physicians, dentists, pharmacists and to those considering an allied health profession.

  10. Bluff City Medical Society

    Bluff City Medical Society, the Memphis affiliate of the National Medical Association, has been providing scholarships for over 20 years for African-American students in Tennessee.

    Criteria:

    • Senior in college or current medical student
    • African-American descent
    • Good academic standing
    • Demonstrated financial need

  11. Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA)

    SNPhA is an educational service association of minority students who are concerned about pharmacy and health care related issues, and the poor minority representation in pharmacy and other health-related professions. Information about The University of Tennessee at Memphis chapter of the organization is available at:

    Members of this organization, which includes University of Memphis graduates, also plan to meet with U of M students periodically.

  12. Medical Scientist Training Program
    University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University
    Summer Undergraduate Research Program

    The Pittsburgh MSTP offers a 10-week summer research and professional development program for underrepresented minority students interested in careers as physician scientists. The program is designed for students in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of college. A stipend of $3,500 plus round trip airfare is provided.   13. University of Michigan Multicultural Affairs Summer Programs

    The University of Michigan School of Dentistry offers a basic science and academic skills enrichment program designed for 1st and 2nd year pre-medical and pre-dental college students and a DAT preparation program designed for 3rd and 4th year pre-dental college students and recent graduates.
