LSAT Prep Information

General Information:  www.lsac.org

The below is a condensed version of LSAT study strategies recommended by LSAC:

The LSAT is a half-day standardized test composed of five sections that contain three different question types:

  1. Reading Comprehension Questions, designed to measure your ability to read and understand complex materials similar to those encountered in law school work.
  2. Analytical Reasoning Questions, designed to measure your ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw logical conclusions about the structure.
  3. Logical Reasoning Questions, designed to evaluate your ability to understand, analyze, criticize, and complete a variety of arguments.

You should become familiar with the type of questions asked, work practice questions, and take several practice tests under timed conditions.  This helps you estimate the amount of time you can afford to spend on each question in a section and to determine the question types on which you may need additional practice.

There is also a writing exercise which is not scored but is used by law school admission officials to assess writing skills.  Write only on the topic specified.  Organize your thoughts before you begin to write.

All in all, your future as a lawyer doesn’t depend upon your performance on the one day of your LSAT exam as much as it depends upon your discipline in preparing well in advance of taking the exam.

  • Start studying early!
  • Hone your reading skills and find out which test-taking Strategies work best for you.

Reading Comprehension

Determine which approach works best for you:

- reading the passage very closely and then answering the questions;

- reading the questions first, reading the passage closely, and then returning to the questions;

- skimming the passage and questions very quickly, then rereading the passage closely and  answering the questions.

Whatever strategy you select, it is important that you read the passage carefully at least once before you answer the questions.  Separate main ideas from supporting ideas and the author’s own ideas or attitudes from factual, objective information.  Examine relationships among different ideas or parts of the passage.

Always read all the answers prior to selecting the best answer.  Do not pick an answer because it is a true statement, but identify the author’s position.  Answer questions only on the basis of the information provided in the passage.  Do not base your answers on our own views, interpretations, or opinions.  Work within the context provided by the passage.

Analytical Reasoning

Careful reading and analysis are necessary to determine the exact nature of the relationships involved.  Some of these are fixed while others are variable or implied and can be deduced from the relationships that are stated.  No formal training in logic is required to answer these questions, although many students find that completing a course such as PHIL 1611 (Elementary Logic) does help prepare one for analytical reasoning questions.

Logical Reasoning

The questions in this section are based on the reasoning contained in brief statements or passages.  Although more than one choice could conceivably answer the question, you need to choose the response that most accurately and completely answers the question.

Most law schools list their entering class profile (average GPA and LSAT score of the students admitted to their program) on their web sites.  Take the time to look up this information, so you will have an idea in regard to the GPA and LSAT scores they regard as competitive.

Taking the LSAT multiple times is not recommended, since many law schools average all attempts on this exam.  Students are strongly encouraged to prepare extremely well for the exam BEFORE they take it.
