PRE-HEALTH LEARNING COMMUNITIES

|
(Photos above: Patsy Krech, Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center, meets with students from ACAD classes in front of Scates Hall.)

Pre-Health Learning Communities offer students interested in careers in the health sciences the opportunity to take three classes with the same students, to learn more about and become involved in health care fields, and to explore topics related to health sciences in these courses.

Research in higher education has shown that learning communities help freshmen become acclimated to college life and to academics and to be retained at a higher level.

To receive permits for either learning community, contact Patsy Krech, Director of Undergraduate Advising, 901.678.3374, 107 Scates Hall, pakrech@memphis.edu. (Once registered for one of these communities, students must receive permission to drop from Ms. Krech.)

English 1010 (ENGL) 1010 is the first semester English course which offers students "practice in expository writing with emphasis on content, organization, and style (levels of usage and sentence structure) for different purposes and audiences." (The Undergraduate Bulletin) (3 hours credit)

ACAD 1100 (ACAD) is the University's Freshman Orientation course. The pre-health learning community sections will be tailored to the needs of students with interests in healthcare careers. Students will develop skills and work on projects to enhance their background in healthcare, in addition to learning the skills and information necessary for success at the university and for lifelong learning. Opportunities for connecting with established professionals in the health field will be incorporated into the course.

Psychology 1200 (PSYC) provides an introduction to psychology as a science of behavior, including the history of psychology; research strategies; biological bases of behavior, learning, memory, intelligence, motivation, emotion, personality, psychological disorders, techniques of therapy and applied science.

Students will participate in a service learning project to utilize the skills of the courses. (3 hours credit)

The benefits of a learning community are great.  As a member of the learning community, you will:

Enjoy guaranteed enrollment in three beneficial courses,
Learn how to be a successful university student,
Make friends quickly with other students who can attend campus events with you, help you get involved, and discuss your career interests,
Form study groups more easily,
Participate in learning with students with similar career interests,
Meet dedicated instructors who will become mentors and provide connections to University resources and career development opportunities.
