About the Center

Researchers at the Center for Research on Women (CROW) examine problems of social inequality as they relate to gender, race, class, and sexual orientation.

Based in the College of Arts & Sciences, this nationally recognized Center collaborates with scholars and researchers in psychology, history, sociology, anthropology, economics, health sciences, public administration and other fields.  The Center also partners with representatives from local, state, and federal government agencies and a variety of non-profit organizations.

CROW's brand of action-oriented, community-based research strengthens the public's understanding of women's experiences in Memphis and contributes to local, regional and national policy discussions.

In addition to ongoing research, Center programs include:

• Publications, workshops and conferences
• Annual Community Issues Forum
• Semi-annual newsletter, StandPoint
• Space and administrative support for the  Memphis Area Women's Council, a non-profit organization working to improve the status of women through positive policy change
• Girls for Change, a project to support, mentor and empower teen girls to work for change in their schools, neighborhoods and communities (in collaboration with the Memphis Area Women's Council and the UofM Women's Studies Program)
• Faculty Research Interest Groups
• Women's Academic Network
• Women's Research Forum
• Participation in the Memphis Safe Campus Consortium, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women, designed to reduce and prevent violence against women on Memphis college campuses.
• Administrative support for the North American Research and Action Network (NARAN) (in collaboration with the Benjamin Hooks Institute for Social Change)
