The Major requires 30 semester hours.African and African American Studies is an Arts and Sciences interdisciplinary academic program. It provides an opportunity for students to comparatively study, analyze, and evaluate the various disciplinary approaches (i.e., humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and arts) incorporating a synthesis of African, American and European cultures. The African and African American Studies specialization strikes a balance between depth and breadth. Academic course work for a specialization in African and African American Studies is composed of: - Required courses which present the theoretical framework and methodology for a cultural approach to the African and African American experience;
- Elective courses that relate to the various disciplinary approaches or areas of concentration.
Core (18 hours) | AAAS 2100 | Introduction to African and African American Studies | Status of Africans and African Americans in historical and modern times. | | AAAS 3100 | Research Methodology in African and African American Studies | Students design research project focusing on African and African American experiences and issues. | | AAAS 4100 | Seminar in African and African American Studies | Capstone course to provide integrated and interdisciplinary understanding of the black experience which arises from culture, society, and the natural world. | | Plus one course from each of the three concentrations. | Concentration (12 hours) Twelve (12) hours from one of the concentrations
