Courses

A major in AAAS consists of a minimum of 30 hours coursework. Courses required of all majors are:

AAAS 2100

Introduction to African and African American Studies. (3 hrs) Status of Africans and African Americans in historical and modern times.

AAAS 3100

Research Methodology in African and African American Studies. (3 hrs.) Students design a research project focusing on African and African American experiences and issues.

AAAS 4100

Seminar in African and African American Studies. (3 hrs.) Capstone course to provide an integrated and interdisciplinary understanding of the black experience which arises from culture, society, and the natural world.

AAAS 4990-4999

Special Topics in African and African American Studies. (3). Topics are varied and announced in the Schedule of Classes. May be taken for a maximum of 6 credit hours when topic varies.

Other

Nine (9) hours of core requirements are earned by taking one elective course from the three areas of emphasis.

Other

Twelve (12) hours of guided elective courses are required from one of the three areas of emphasis in AAAS. Student majors will be permitted to take no more than six (6) hours of course work in any given discipline.

Other

The program of study must be planned with a faculty adviser.
