GOAL 2. SUPPORT FACULTY DEVELOPMENT.

Objective

1. Define how 'engaged scholarship' is valued for purposes of merit raises and promotions by spring 2004.

The College is working closely with the UofM Ad Hoc Engaged Scholarship Task Force. The Task Force met with CAS faculty in October 2003 to discuss engaged scholarship. Their presentation and a summary of the follow up discussion are available at http:// CAS.memphis.edu. The five-year target for this objective is to integrate engaged scholarship into departmental tenure and promotion guidelines, where appropriate.

2. Recruit and retain minority faculty.

The population of the City of Memphis is more than 50% African-American. The UofM student body is more than 35% African-American. Only 4% of tenured and tenure track faculty in the CAS are African-American. The College received a small grant in fall 2003 to promote recruiting and retention of African-American faculty. A Minority Faculty Recruiting and Retention Committee has been formed to look at these issues in a systematic way and develop a minority faculty recruiting and retention plan for the College.

3. Increase professorships to support faculty research.

Professorships provide additional support for faculty to develop research strong programs. Endowed professorships (chairs) are permanent, fully-funded positions. Supplemental professorships provide partial funding to spur development of a faculty member's research initiative. The College currently has five endowed chairs and supports the research of nine faculty through supplemental professorships. The three-year target for this objective is to have seven endowed chairs and supplemental support for 20 faculty.

4. Improve mentoring of associate professors to full professor rank.

In order to help each faculty member attain her or his fullest scholarly potential, every department should have institutionah2zed mentoring processes to help associate professors move toward full professor rank. Associate professors in every department should have a clear understanding of what is required to become a full professor in that department and receive regular feedback on their progress. The three-year target for this objective is for every CAS department to have in place a systematic way of looking at associate professors' progress and providing appropriate feedback.
