English Honors Program Requirements

BENEFITS:
  • Small classes with highly motivated students
  • Individualized attention from professors
  • Supplemental departmental advising
  • Opportunities to conduct substantial research and creative projects
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary study
  • Opportunities to compete for scholarly awards
  • Greater preparation for advanced study (graduate or professional school)
  • Impressive credential for graduate or professional school applications
  • "Honors in English" emblem attached to your diploma

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3.25 GPA, overall and in English
  • One Honors Seminar
    • The Honors Seminar, 4001, is offered once a year in the fall, and may be taken during your junior or senior year.
    • Honors Seminars offer you the opportunity to work closely with professors in their current areas of research. They allow for in-depth study and discussion, and also explore topics of interest from many perspectives in English scholarship.

  • One thesis or major paper
  • 6 additional hours of upper-division Honors credit in English
    • These can be completed by enrolling in Honors sections of the required Core classes in English. Each semester, one section of 3210, 3220, or 3327 is offered as an Honors class.
    • If you are unable to take Honors sections of the Core for scheduling reasons, you may contract for Honors credit in another class using the University Honors Program form. Discuss options for productive extra classwork with your professor: these include class presentations, annotated bibliographies, or other research, design, or creative projects. Submit your form to me (and to UHP, if you are participating in both programs) early in the semester.
    • If you have taken two or more of Core classes at another university, or if you have taken Honors classes at another university, please contact me.

Honors students are encouraged to meet with me during advising sessions before each semester. Please note that the English Honors Program complements the University Honors Program, providing extra advising and course opportunities to English majors who choose to participate in the latter. You may enroll in only one, but you are encouraged to enroll in both.
