M.A. in ESL concentration

Students in the ESL concentration follow an integrated program of study that helps them develop expertise in the many areas included in ESL: second language acquisition, cross-cultural issues, language policy and planning, and second/foreign language instruction. Besides developing skills in analyzing language, assessing language ability, and planning language instruction, students apply their knowledge through internships in the U.S. and in other countries.

Students majoring in either E.S.L. or Linguistics often take courses in both areas. The University of Memphis offers both a B.A. and an M.A. with a concentration in E.S.L. Both degrees require courses in Linguistics as well as in E.S.L.

An average of two Linguistics and three E.S.L. courses are taught each semester on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Summer courses and workshops are also offered for teachers seeking an add-on endorsement in E.S.L.

Some graduate students teach English abroad in the Czech Republic, China, and at Chuo Gakuin University in Japan. Students have also presented papers at professional conferences such as The Southeastern Conference on Linguistics, NWAVE, Tennessee TESOL, and International TESOL.

E.S.L. Practicuum Opportunities in the Memphis Community include:

  • The Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program
  • The Jewish Community Center Russian Resettlement Program
  • Vocational English classes offered by the Memphis City Schools at the Messick Adult Center
  • The Intensive English for Internationals (I.E.I.) program at the University of Memphis
  • Tutoring English at the Memphis College of Art

Employment opportunities include teaching in the U.S. and abroad in various programs in E.S.L. and Linguistics. Current graduates are pursuing Ph.D.s at the University of Memphis and at other schools and teaching E.S.L. in the U.S. and in foreign countries.
