In order to take an Independent Study you must contact the particular Professor you wish to work with well in advance of the semester you plan to take the Independent Study and set up an agreed upon course of study outlined in a Prospectus which the Professor must approve. Read the Prospectus Instructions linked to this page, then fill out the Independent Study Prospectus and Registration Form, get the appropriate signatures, and take the Registration Form to the Departmental Registrar in Patterson Hall 469. After an Independent Study section in the name of your Professor is created for you, your form will be put in your file. Independent Study is reserved for those topics not covered in the regular course offerings. Note that only 3 hours of Independent Study can count toward your degree.
- You must have completed a minimum of 12 hours that count toward your degree before you are qualified to take an Independent Study. Also, no Independent Study may be taken if the topic and/or coursework is offered in a regular class.
- Choose an instructor to serve as director of your Independent Study. He or she is responsible for giving you the grade for your hours. YOU MUST DO THIS WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE DATE THAT YOU REGISTER. Discuss your ideas with them, and discuss what you should include in your prospectus.
- Type all information except for the signature of the instructor. Please note that you may type directly onto the prospectus form, or use it as a guide to create your own prospectus.
- Once your instructor has approved the prospectus, have him or her sign the prospectus and the Independent Study Registration Form (top and bottom). Give him or her a copy of your prospectus.
- Have your major advisor sign the Independent Study Registration Form (top and bottom).
- Bring the signed prospectus and the Independent Study Registration Form to the departmental registrar.
- The forms will be kept in your file.
- You do not have to register for Independent Study hours at the same time that you register for the rest of your classes. Since the prospectus may take a little time to complete, you can register for your other classes and add Independent Study hours later. Graduate Assistants must be registered for at least 12 hours by the last day of the current semester, and all students must have completed registration by the 4th day of classes in the new semester. DO NOT PUT THIS OFF UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!! Since the forms require signatures, you want to leave enough time to obtain them (someone may be out of town).
M.F.A. STUDENTS MAY NOT USE INDEPENDENT STUDY TO COUNT TOWARD GRADUATION.
M.A. STUDENTS MAY COUNT ONLY 3 HOURS OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TOWARD THE DEGREE, AND ONLY AS AN ELECTIVE.
