Students at the University of Memphis must satisfy the two-semester First-Year Composition requirement, English 1010 and English 1020. (Transfer students and incoming freshman with AP or IB scores can verify their status with the Undergraduate Admissions office.)
English 1010 at the University of Memphis emphasizes analysis.
As those engaged in and by English Studies, the instructors in the First-Year Composition program are skilled in how language works. The analytical skills we help develop in our students are those associated with the ways texts make meaning and the ways we make meaning of -- and with -- texts. We aim to improve our students' abilities with language by engaging them in meaningful acts of reading and writing.
We believe learning occurs best in an environment that encourages discussion, the respectful exchange of ideas, peer collaboration, and frequent writing encouraged and guided by thoughtful feedback.

English 1020 at the University of Memphis emphasizes research and argument.
Regardless of their majors, students will encounter texts that offer reasoned argumentation founded upon research and disciplinary inquiry. As citizens, they encounter all manner of persuasive texts that clamor for their assent or surrender.
Our aim is to help our students recognize the dimensions of argument and research in ways that prepare them to enter the disciplinary conversations of the university and to thoughtfully participate in the debates in our democratic society.
