Research Interest
My interests span a wide range of geologic subjects and I am currently working with colleagues and students both at the University of Memphis and elsewhere on problems of mutual interest. One of those subjects includes research on active faults, paleoseismites, and tectonics primarily in the northern Basin and Range Province, the Atlantic Coastal Plain, and the Giles County (Virginia) seismic zone. These studies include trenching active faults, geomorphic analysis of Quaternary features, and collection of fracture data from quarries, clay pits, and road cuts. I also have long standing interests in the tectonics of Grenvillian basement rocks of the central and southern Appalachians and in the structural evolution of both the Appalachian and Cordilleran fold & thrust belts. Other subjects of interest include the structural development of Triassic rift basins in the SE USA, dike/laccolith emplacement in the Alkalic Province of Montana, Quaternary evolution of river basins, landslide and earthquake hazards, and mantle roots.
