UM Bioinformatics Hires Assistant Professor Victor Jin Dr. Victor Jin Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics in the Department of Biology in January 2008.Originally from China, Jin graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai in 1988 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with a special emphasis in bioinorganic chemistry. Dr. Jin continued his education at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he earned a Ph.D. in supramolecular chemistry in 2001. Next, Dr. Jin received a Master of Science degree in computer science with a concentration in Bioinformatics from the University of Ottawa in 2003.
From 2003 to 2005, Dr. Jin performed post doctoral work at Ohio State University where he received the prestigious “Up on the Roof” Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Human Genetics Program. At OSU, Dr. Jin’s focus of study was computational biology and bioinformatics. While at OSU, he was involved in developing software tools and algorithms for identifying estrogen receptor target genes on a genome-wide scale. From 2005 to 2007, Dr. Jin held an appointment in the Genome Center at the University of California at Davis as a Post-doctoral scientist. He worked on developing new algorithms in identification and characterization of genomic regulatory elements and networks, as well as statistical modeling of high throughput data, such as those generated by gene-expression microarrays, ChIP-chip and ChIP-Seq technologies. He will continue his research in these areas while at the University of Memphis. Dr. Ramin Homayouni, head of University of Memphis Bioinformatics Program.
